Self-Care for Busy Moms

Whether you’re a stay-at-home mom, working mom, or single mom, we are all way too busy. I’ve been on multiple sides of the spectrum. Before I was divorced, I was a stay-at-home mom for 5 years. After my divorce, I became a single working mom and now I’m a work at home mom. As moms, we put 00100dportrait_00100_burst20180911212549813_covereveryone else’s needs before our own. It’s what we do and we wouldn’t have it any other way…most of the time. However, it’s crucial that you take time for yourself AT LEAST once a week (preferably more). We’ve all heard the phrase, “you can’t pour from an empty cup.”

A couple of years ago, I was working 60 plus hours a week at an extremely stressful job, barely making enough to make ends meet. I was always stressed, rarely slept, and honestly I wasn’t a blast to be around. I was so on edge and cranky because I didn’t make time to take care of myself. If not for Ben basically taking care of me everyday, I probably would have starved to death and our tiny apartment would have burned to the ground. I made sure my kids were fed, bathed, dressed, etc. but couldn’t be available for them emotionally. My cup wasn’t just empty, it was shattered.

I took myself out of that situation and have since started working from home. My job is nowhere near as stressful as it used to be but I still have to be conscious about stopping to take a breath. We all need to take time for ourselves every now and then. Here are some great tips on how to do that without spending a ton of time and a ton of money.

Detox Bath – 30 mins
One of my favorite things to do when I’m feeling drained, is to take a bath. Any bath will do but a detox bath helps lower your stress levels by pulling toxins out of your body. Everything you need is easily attainable on either Amazon or at the grocery store. The detox bath recipe I use is:
1/2 cup Bentonite Clay
1 cup Epsom Salt
10 drops Lavendar Essential Oil

Mani/Pedi at home – 30 minutes
Giving yourself a mani/pedi at home can greatly improve your mood and give you a little time to yourself. It doesn’t take much time or money either. All you need is a good sugar scrub (here are a couple of my faves: Tree Hut Almond & Honey, Soap & Glory Sugar Crush) and your favorite nail color! Scrub your hands and feet and soak them in warm water. If you’re feeling extra fancy, get some nice glue on nails from the store for your mani. I use Kiss nails and I’m obsessed! They last for 1-2 weeks and are only between $4.99 and $9.99 depending on the designs you choose!

Take a nap – 30 to 90 minutes
This one is a no-brainer. We are all sleep deprived and I think if adults had naptime, the world would be a better place. Depending on how much time you have, here are the benefits of naptimes:
10-20 minutes of sleep: Boosts alertness and energy
30 minutes of sleep: Not an ideal amount of sleep – 30 minute naps usually leave you feeling hungover
60 minutes of sleep: Increases memory but may be hard to wake up from
90 minutes of sleep: This is the ideal amount of sleep. Increases emotional and procedural memory and creativity! You will get a full cycle of sleep with a 90 minute nap and be less groggy waking up!

Coffee and window shop – 1 hour
If you’re like me, you coop yourself up in the house while the kids are school and make sure everything gets done while you have the chance. At some point, I tend to get a little stir crazy and I need to get out of the house. Let some of your chores slide (or double up the day before) and take an hour to grab yourself some coffee and go window shopping. I usually end up at Target (duh!) and the one near me has a Starbucks in it so I grab my coffee there. Even if you don’t get anything, it gives you some time to get away and enjoy some quiet time alone.

Light a candle, make a cup of coffee/tea, read a book – 1 hour
This is one of my favorite ways to relax. I rarely have time to sit and read a book anymore. I always get so excited when I schedule time for myself to read. I personally like to read with a nice hot cup of coffee or tea, depending on my mood, and an aromatherapy candle (I use this one) . Sometimes I read self help and motivational type books but usually when I’m trying to relax, I read Harry Potter because…obviously!

Workout sesh – 30 minutes
To be honest, usually working out is not my idea of relaxation. I hate it. Sometimes, though, I get super motivated and feel an overwhelming urge to sweat! It doesn’t happen often for me but when it does happen, I take advantage of that energy and either put on an exercise video on YouTube or go for a run. I always feel so energized afterwards!

Face Mask – 30 minutes
Sometimes I have a hard time winding down before bedtime and doing a relaxing face mask to help me out. I have a bit of an obsession with face masks but here are a few of my faves:
Neutrogena HydroBoost Mask  (Moisturizing)

SheaMoisture Black African Soap Mask (Detoxifying)
