2018 Summer Obsessions

My 2018 Summer Obsessions!

I realize that Fall is on the horizon but it’s still summer, ya’ll. In fact, in Atlanta it will feel like summer until about Thanksgiving. So, even though Fall is only 45 days away (but who’s counting), I thought I’d share with you my 2018 Summer obsessions! Every season brings new ‘feels’ and this summer, these are the things that I obsessed over and will continue to obsess over until precisely September 22.

Outfits

Chuck Taylors:
My chucks go with almost everything. I love wearing flip flops in the summer but some days, let’s be real…my toes just aren’t always presentable. If it’s been a while since my last at-home pedi, I reach for these shoes. They’re also super comfortable so they’re great for activities that require you to walk a lot.

Tied Up T-Shirts:
I’m pretty sure this is a 90’s trend but hey, the 90’s are coming back, right? I love over sized t-shirts and I probably own about 40 of them. Once the weather started warming up, I started tying my shirts up to make them look more summery with jeans! Just don’t forget to untie them before you wash them unless you want them permanently tied or horribly wrinkled. I learned that the hard way.

Ripped Jeans:
One of my favorite trends right now is ripped jeans. Basically every pair of jeans I wear lately has holes in them. Whenever I put on a pair that doesn’t, I feel sort of weird. I am not one to wear shorts. I’ve always been extremely self conscious about my legs and I just don’t feel comfortable in them. The best thing that ever happened to me in the summer was ripped jeans. Not only are they super cute and stylish, they help keep me cool when it’s a million degrees outside. My favorite pair right now is the Johanna Distressed Skinny Jeans in Dark Denim from FashionNova. If you haven’t discovered FashionNova yet, you’re missing out. Especially as a curvy girl, you won’t find a better fit for such a great price! (#notsponsored)

Food & Drink

Key Lime Flavored La Croix:
In this house, we buy way too much sparkling water. We enjoy almost all brands but La Croix has definitely set the stage for the other brands. When the Key Lime flavor came out, I honestly expected it to just taste like lime. BUT NO! If you haven’t put this in your mouth yet, you’re missing out. It literally tastes like a key lime pie. It’s so good!

Lettuce Wraps
This summer, I went low carb and gluten free. Not just for weight loss, but because I am working on fixing my PCOS symptoms by lowering my blood sugar. Lunchtime got a little more complicated once I cut out bread. So, I got creative one day and threw together lunch on some romaine lettuce. I got hooked! Romaine lettuce or any leaf lettuce works great and you can use leftover shredded chicken, lunchmeat, or even tuna! It’s super quick, inexpensive, and up to 200 calories than sandwich bread!

Pineapple Juice
Earlier this year, Kim Kardashian started preaching the benefits of pineapple juice again. I gave it a try and now I’m hooked. Say what you want about Kim, she looks amazing and if she says it keeps her looking good, I’ll try it! Pineapple juice has so many amazing benefits! It lowers cholesterol, prevents colds, helps you heal injuries faster, helps with digestion, relieves joint pain, boosts energy (moms – it works!), reduces cancer, and it has anti-aging properties! Also, it tastes really good and is super refreshing so it can’t hurt, right? I actually like to mix mine with a flavored sparkling water because it just makes it less thick – I have texture issues. I have been buying the dole pineapple juice in the small cans at the grocery store.

Starbucks Pink Drink
You’ve probably seen these cutesy Pink Drinks all over the interet, particularly on instagram. I started seeing them everywhere and honestly thought they’d taste like strawberry milk or something. In fact, because I saw them everywhere, I made a conscious decision NOT to get one because I thought it was kind of cheesy to buy a drink just because it was pink and girly. I saw another blogger get one and talk about how refreshing it was and decided to give one a try to see what the fuss was all about. Well, newsflash, they’re sort of delicious. I expected it to be kind of creamy and thick but since they are made with coconut milk, they are not milky at all.  However, they are light, fruity, and extremely addictive. It’s made up of the Strawberry Acai Refresher and coconut milk with a few strawberries. Not only is it super cute and photogenic, it’s delicious and refreshing! Try one. Get a Venti….trust me! Also, if you’re feeling like something extra fruity, get it with a strawberry infusion. (#alsonotsponsored)

Skincare & Beauty

Kiss Nails
I came across these nails when I went to a Christmas party a couple of years ago and didn’t have time to get my nails done. I grabbed some adorable glue on nails expecting that they’d just last the night. They ended up lasting almost 2 weeks! This became sort of a game changer for me. Even when I could afford to get my nails done, I didn’t. Maybe I’m the only weirdo out there who hates the process of getting their nails done but…it is what it is. I hate it.

Almost every week, I buy a new set. Sometimes they last a week, sometimes 2 weeks, depending on how hard I am on them. Each pack is between $6 and $10 depending on whether they have designs, etc. You can even get plain ones and paint them yourself! These have kept my nails looking GREAT all summer. I do not recommend using the glue that comes in the package (although it does work in a pinch). I buy the Kiss Maximum Speed Nail glue instead and they stay on much better! So far, I’ve found them at CVS, Walgreens, Target, and Walmart.

Shea Moisture African Black Soap Clarifying Mud Mask
I have been loving the Target beauty boxes (even though they have sold out of them for the past 2 months so I haven’t been able to get my hands on them)!  Back in April or May, I received a beauty box that included the Shea Moisture African Black Soap Clarifying Mud Mask and it’s now a staple in my skincare routine! I honestly used it one night with very little expectation because I have a love/hate relationship with face masks. I’ve used a few good ones but usually they make my skin feel very dry and dull. My skin is not acne-prone and stays towards the dry to normal side and it made my skin feel so amazing and moisturized.

I know that Ulta carries the 6 oz tub for $15.99 but I’ve only been able to find the ‘one time use’ sizes at my Target for about $3 but they have it listed on their website for $14.99. Don’t be fooled by that small packaging though, a little goes a long way. I’ve been able to get as many as 4 uses out of the small package at Target! If you try out this mask, let me know what you think of it!!

Life’s A Drag Lunar Beauty Palette
If you know anything about me, you know that I’m sort of a makeup junkie! I love watching beauty channels and wanted to have one of my own for a while. I’ll explain more about how that went in a later post. MannyMUA is one of my favorite beauty gurus and he recently came out with his first palette from his new beauty line, Lunar Beauty. The palette is called, ‘Life’s a Drag’ and was inspired by his Drag roots! Don’t let that fool you though, this palette is super wearable and I’ve been pretty much obsessed with it since I ordered it (on the day it launched of course!)!

Farsali Jelly Beam Highlighter (or e.l.f. Baked Highlighter as an affordable option)
A good highlighter is a must in the summer. This year I developed a bit of an obsession with highlighters. One of my absolute faves was the Farsali Jelly Beam Highlighter. It has a jelly texture that applies super smooth and is blinding! It is a little bit on the pricey side with a cost of $40 so a good alternative is the e.l.f cosmetics brand baked highlighter in shade Moonlight Pearls. It’s not a jelly substance but it has a similar color and is only $4. The one thing to note though, is that right after you buy it, you should scrape off the top layer of powder before using it. After that ‘crust’ layer is removed, it applies like a dream!

So, that’s it! Those are my Summer 2018 obsessions! I hope you enjoyed this post! Tell me about your summer obsessions in the comments below! Also, if you’ve tried any of mine, let me know your thoughts on them!

Until next time, friends,

Jess
